Day Sixty-“Healing to the Beat of Your Own Drummer”-The Power of Music

rumi

Imagine if your entire life was set to music. The intensity of emotions is represented

even further by the film scores that are carefully selected to go along with great movies.

Songs can represent a myriad of human connections-a time; a place; a moment; a person;

an event…Imagine a world with no music…

You don’t need technology or even instruments to create beautiful music-we all

have the innate ability to sing, hum or rap out a beat-a gift we are all born with.

Nature composes millions of intricate soundscapes every single day. Babies beat

out a rhythm as soon as they develop their dexterity using pots, pans and wooden

spoons.

Music can lift our spirits when we are broken; intensify moments of unadulterated

joy and happiness; move our souls to dance; cheer us on a rainy day; allow us to

grovel in our pain for a little while…

From premature babies, to the elderly, music therapy has been on the rise as its

effects are obvious and indisputable. There are documented cases of people

coming out of mental comas’, healing from illnesses, being set free all in the

name of music.

Cultures are defined by the music that is carried on over generations and

generations-this music bonds the community.

Personally I know that the days I have music guiding me through my day are

the best ones; I also know that when I pick up my guitar or sit at the piano

and create music my soul is comforted and proud. This weekend my husband

and I played music with our friend and for four hours we played until we

collapsed from exhaustion-the mojo was electric and the music was kinetic.

Today’s focus is on the healing power of music.

Day Twenty-One: Purging the Past & Embracing the Present

past9

Much like our homes need to be de-cluttered when things pile

up and become a burden; so do our bodies, minds and spirits.

When we begin to feel overwhelmed we can feel an ethereal

heaviness weighing us down. Holding on to the past makes this

sense of being even more intense. If we keep flipping back to the

past, or continue on with past behaviors that keep us from

evolving to the next rung on the well-being ladder, we stay

at the bottom of the ladder rather than climbing up towards

the sun. Similarly, if we hold on to damaging past relationships

we continue to be scarred by them. Think of the past as a

walkway that you can leave behind, not like a merry-go round

that you need to keep spinning around on aimlessly until you

feel so nauseous you collapse. Stopping it may take some

effort, but once you place your feet firmly on the ground you

will be able to embrace the here and now and look toward

the future.

The past has a positive role; the challenging times can give us

the gift of empathy and compassion; when a shared experience

can connect us or teach us something that we can share with

others.

Releasing the past can allow us to embrace the present and

the future. Continuing to look forward allows us to remove the

heavy bags and walk lightly along our new and promising

pathway.

past8

Today’s focus will be on the importance of releasing

the past in order for us to move in a positive forward

direction.

past7

Journal Entry: Create a list of past relationships, experiences,

habits etc. that you feel are holding you from embracing the present

and the future. Using your ‘miracle question’-imagining you awake

tomorrow and you have magically let go of those past hindrances.

Write about what your life would look like without them.

Day Nine: The Language of Letting Go

Now today is New Years Eve; a time where we think of resolutions

and have high hopes that this next year we will make the changes

necessary for us to be the ‘us’ we’ve always visualized being.

Remember to not be so hard on yourself because it is when we

fail that we learn the most about life and ourselves. If everyday

was a peach we would live a linear existence, which in and of

itself, may end up being very unsatisfying. Living life as a

perfectionist has made me very self abrasive; which resulted

in so much self defeating behavior and self talk. I would never

speak to anyone else in my life the way I spoke and continue to

speak to myself.

A wise woman-my student teaching mentor-told me something

so memorable after my worst day teaching. I was in tears and

exasperated and she was smiling. She said “let’s talk about your

lesson today.” I responded by saying, “It was horrible, the worst

one ever, they were so out of control.” She responded saying that

it was fabulous and we talked about how I could change things the

next day to overcome those problems. It was as though the world

just opened up and I started to see problems as challenges that were

set in place to help me grow and learn as a person. I think that has

helped me teach my young students to also embrace mistakes and

failure rather than seeing them as hopeless and insurmountable.

Today’s focus will be centered around Letting Go of the past and

embracing tomorrow.

This morning when you wake up, think about something

significant in your life that has been weighing you down.

What would your life look like if you let that thing go?

Journal Entry: Write about a time when you let go of something

that was damaging to you. How did you find the strength to let go of it?

What changes occurred in your life afterwards?  Now what currently is

holding you back? How can you find the strength to let go of that and

what would your life look like after the change occurs?

Letting-Go

Self Care: Declutter Your Life-Cleanse your life of any activities

or obligations that are keeping you stagnant or holding you back.

Remember, you have the right to say NO! The more you practice

saying this tiny yet powerful word the more free you’ll become.

Consider each obligation and activity and ponder whether it

is necessary or is adding more weight to your already full life.

When you purge, you leave room for something new and exciting.
