Day Eighty-Five: “What Do You Mean Your Spiritual?”-The Difference between Spirituality & Religion

Feature Artist-All of His Paintings are on Today’s Blog

Nikhel Big

When people ask me if I am religious and I retort with the answer

“No, but I am a spiritual woman”. I get the same responses every-time:

a glazed and confused look-as if the individual is too polite to say “What

is that supposed to mean?”; or maybe a “well what religion do you

most relate to?”; or even a quick change of subject to avoid delving

into the conversation altogether.

Being spiritual does not mean that you commit to a specific religion

or way of thinking; it means that you believe in something more than

ego based thinking…that you connect to a higher source be it outside

or inside oneself…that you seek peace and enlightenment and reach

for ways to connect more fully with life and it’s magic.

I am not saying that if you fall under the “spiritual” category that

you shut the door to religion-you may actually connect to aspects of

many, many religions but feel that if you submit to just one that you

will be closed off to learning and appreciating all of the other religions

and what they have to offer.

There are many things in life that make you feel closer to your source

and for us “spiritual folk” that could be something like sitting in a tree

and feeling it rock gently with the wind; a quiet moment of meditation

where you feel so at ease and comfortable with yourself that you are

afraid to stop; digging in the earth as you watch the seeds you spread

grow into vegetables; connecting with the essence of your body during

yoga; listening to your child laugh with wild abandon…

Does this mean that we are all spiritual? I think we all live our lives

seeking the “spiritual experience” and that connecting with one another

regardless of our belief system can also enhance our feeling of contentedness

to our source.

My spiritual path during this very difficult time in my life is what has

allowed me to rise like a phoenix out of the ashes and desperately seek

out meaningful moments all throughout my day as a way of healing

myself. When I reconnect with my “spirituality and practices” I

am either so lost and disconnected and I need it to rescue me, or

I am at my best and it allows me to be even better!

Day Sixty-Seven: “Don’t Give Yourself Away”: The Spiritual Side of Sex & Intimacy

Depending on what stage of your life you are in; where you are from;

what culture you are immersed in sex is an issue that stares you in the

eyes on a fairly regular basis. So let’s talk openly and frankly without

beating around the bush (excuse the pun).

Whether you are single or married there needs to be a spark to

ignite the flame of intimacy; if there is no spark you may as well

be a robot carrying out the sequence of events programmed in

your mainframe computer.

The singles of the world are faced with the excitement and spark of

a new relationship but have the latent fears that come with not knowing

what the other person likes in the bedroom-until that barrier is crossed

there is no telling if the chemistry that exists will start a fire.

One thing for sure is that the movies give a slightly skewed view of what

a first sexual experience is like for a fresh couple-so ladies and gentleman;

if your first sexual moment with one another is sloppy and confusing don’t

berate yourself too much-it takes a long time to develop a synchronistic

intimate connection with someone.

Yesterday we spoke of the importance of a vibrational match-I feel this

is most important when it comes to sex and intimacy.

Now it’s time to talk about the married couples-intimacy can go a few different

ways when you’ve been together for several years. You can become out of

sync with one another and all of a sudden detach sexually-having lots of headaches,

going months without coping a feel and being “too tired” to make love after the

may responsibilities you have.

If your relationship is sexually void; is there another underlying issue that has

yet to be revealed? People can be asexual (meaning the desire for sex isn’t there),

but we all need to express our sexual selves.

If one partner is not getting what they need from a sexual interlude that

can be a huge problem. Most of the women that have confided in me about

not having sex for years have partners that are selfish in the bedroom-

leaving their wives devoid of pleasure. A one sided ordeal is very

counter-productive-don’t give it away.

I recently watched a comedy act and she talked about how women take longer

to reach orgasm-men can have one fairly quickly for the most part-but for

women it is a complex puzzle that needs to be solved with patience and care.

What about fantasies; if we’re married and we have fantasies about someone else

(famous or otherwise) why do we punish ourselves with overwhelming guilt?

Being with one person for the rest of our lives is lovely and wonderful but

we need to ensure that we maintain our spark for one another-fantasies

can help this.

Sex and intimacy are beautiful and integral to making us feel alive.

Sex can and should be a spiritual experience where both partners are mutually

respected and both partners are taken on a sensual journey into the abyss

of love-flying high on the intensity of loving someone else so completely.

If there are blockages and you are forcing yourself to be intimate for your

partner I think you are doing yourself and your partner a dis-service-one

of these decisions could cause resentment and bitterness and alter the

way you feel about your partner forever.

Never Give Yourself Away! Sex is something to be respected, adored,

revered…It is a sacred and spiritual source that connects us to one another.

One violation can change the course of our sexual future-so treat each other

with respect, honor one another.

Your body is your temple so make sure that if anyone wants to

come inside they need to clean their feet and worship you.

Morning Meditation:

Journal Entry: Examine how healthy your sexual life is. Are you blocked?

Are you fulfilled and honest with your partner? Does your vibrational

resonance match? Are there things you are not communicating to your

partner that you feel would help you and your partner improve in any

area of your sexual life? Write a letter to your partner about this and

give or don’t give it to them. If you are single-examine what you need

from a partner and what your comfort level is when it comes to sex.

Day Fifty-Six: “You Can Overcome it!”-A Spiritual Guide to Healing Substance Abuse

images (1)

Here is the next piece in our addiction recovery series. When we are suffering

with an addiction to substance abuse-the knowledge that this substance controls

us is the sign that it is harming us rather than it being a harmless and

moderated social usage. Similarly to an addiction to a certain type of food it

can disable us and pull us apart from our true selves.

I know when I am not doing well or if I have an unbelievable amount of

stress because that 1/2 a glass of red wine becomes three and I stumble

and mumble my way up to bed that night with a feeling that I am dirty.

Some people feel that if they let the substance entirely go the goal of

releasing it completely is too hard to bear-never having their crutch or

little best friend-who got them through thick and thin-ever again! It can

seem daunting and unattainable.

When I quit smoking I knew the only option was to completely let those

nasty sticks go-if they were kept within reach I would have followed my

previous patterns of just starting back up-full bore once a fabricated

or real reason for me to increase my habit materialized to me.

Some people though can regulate and continue a relationship with

their substance-and they are able to moderate it successfully. Each

of us knows at our core what effects us negatively and how it effects

I think not being so hard on ourselves when we fall from grace is very

important-we all stumble and we all end up regaining the strength

to pick ourselves back up.

Love yourself and care for your soul-really consider that crutch and

if there is any other way you can soothe your heartbreak-is there a

friend you can call? A warm soothing lavender bath you can run?

An oasis in nature you can immerse yourself in? A craft you can express

your raw emotion through?

Noticing what triggers you to go for your addiction is also an important

skill to hone-if you are conscious as to how you are affected before you

reach for the crutch-you may be able to change the course of your choice.

Much like all other addictions-you have the power to overcome

and release yourself from mental slavery!!! Believe in Yourself!!!

Morning Prayer for Addiction Recovery

Journal Entry: Explore whether there is any substances in your life that

you feel are controlling you. If so what causes the addiction to spike?

Remember a time that you were free of the chains of this addiction? What was

different in your life at the time? How did you do it? How can you do more about it?

Make a list of things you can do rather than reach for that substance and make

copies that you can carry with you, place in your home/office/locker etc.

Day Forty-Do You Have the Force?-Star Wars as a Spiritual Playbook of the Universe and Beyond

After introducing ourselves to one another in my Reiki Level II class;

our lovely, soft spoken Reiki Master shared that we would be learning to

give distance healing to others and have the ability to use Reiki to heal

past and future experiences. In the Art of Japanese Usui Reiki Healing

Rei means-Universal/Spiritual Wisdom and Ki-means-The Life Energy.

Now Reiki is not a religious art it is a universal healing and scientific

art where the chakras become cleansed and can be aligned by therapeutic

touch. The healing “love” energy is pure and can be passed from the

practitioner to the patient even when the hands are not directly

on the body.

After learning of the new distant healing techniques our classroom

was a buzz with excitement and I said-“Wow, we really do have the

force.” A discussion in-sued and a former student now fellow student

of Reiki said he believed that Star Wars was a very Spiritual Saga

and that the undertones contained very strong and universal messages.

Of course; as coincidence or the source would have it my family had

been watching all of the films in the series over the past months-in

order and I had perceived the films from a more grounded and

spiritually connected place. I made the decision to research and

explore these connections for the this epic day 40; so while we were

watching Star Wars III yesterday I fervently scrawled down all of the

connections I witnessed throughout the film. Did George Lucas have

some connection spiritually to the story he weaved; one of the most

memorable film series that moulded people of all ages around the

globe. What was it about the series that sparked all people-from atheists

to the most devout Christians (there is a following of Christians online).

Was it the sizably epic battle between good and evil? The mystical nature

of The Force (both dark and light)? Was it the personal journey of the

characters that appealed to people? How trauma could cause someone to

become innately evil (Anni-Darth) or impenetrably heroic (Luke/Yoda/Obi Wan).

In some of the interviews that follow, George Lucas confirms the idea of

a universally spiritual undertone and message. Since he called this “The Force”

and did not make references to “God” or “Allah” or “Buddha”-he initiated

a meaningful viewing experience that focused on a desire for the innately good

(the Light Side of the Force) to prevail. Now any religion could interpret Star

Wars and make it fit their religious terminology. That was the point-George

Lucas wanted to be able to have audiences all over the globe-receive and

connect to the humanity within the films. He says in the interview below

that he left the films open to interpretation but embedded messages and

experiences that could move and connect all people no matter what their

religious affiliation or cultural norm. When Luke went to the forest to learn

from his master he was experiencing a vision quest-which is a shamanic

journey that Native Americans have gone on for centuries to connect with

their spiritual side.

If I compare “The Force” to living life as a very empathic and connected

person I can see the connections to both the light and dark side. I am

able to sense the innate goodness and light in people and can also

feel the darkness and penetrative negativity that oozes out of

psychic vampires (evil people). I try so very hard to not let the

darkness consume me but this is a skill I am still learning to deflect.

The gift of Reiki (my Force) has begun to give me the tools to protect

and heal my energy so that it is not hunted by others or if they do

penetrate the veil I can reconstruct myself and balance my energy

once again.

It is wonderful to have my eyes opened once again-the debris is

beginning to clear and I hope that I may keep the force with me.

Day Fifteen: Climbing out of the Abyss: Dealing with a Depressed Soul

They say “What Goes Up, Must Come Down.” As it stands I am living proof

of this, as are many of my fellow human beings. I think we all have moments

that could qualify within the depressive range.

But, the thing we all strive for, all of us, universally, is Happiness.

That sometimes tangible emotion that we wish we could bottle up

and save to use again and again at will.

What if we were to embrace this darkness and use it as a vehicle for

evolution within ourselves.

Approaching my depression this time, the symptoms looked

familiar and they tried to pull me into their vortex. They still try, but I

have put on my armor and I am attacking them at the entrance to my

fragile soul. Could depression be our souls way of communicating that

we need to simplify, step back and cocoon ourselves in safety for awhile?

Since going on leave I have realized that I need to be in solitude in order

to recover myself. I am starting to see moments of brightness shine

through the dark gaps in my mind. I am able to find moments where

I truly connect with my family after so many years of just shutting

down and being an empty shell when I get home at the end of the day.

My body is softening, rather than seizing violently all day long. My soul

is receiving key messages that lay hidden from awareness for so long.

This time, I have the insight to realize I am in complete

control of my thoughts and how I deal with them.

In order to conquer depression I feel we need to pull from all sorts

of resources and offerings. Medication can be key but it cannot be

the solitary band-aid solution. It must be mixed with more holistic

therapies, self-care, excellent nourishment of the trifecta

(body, mind & soul), support from loved ones and a re-connection

to nature and spirit. If you know someone is depressed please

understand that telling them that “you’re lazy, why don’t you just

pull yourself out of it?, “aren’t the meds. working?” are detrimental

comments that just reinforce the individuals already self deprecating

sense of self worth. These lost souls need love, support , hope and

optimism as much as a cancer patient needs chemotherapy. Their

illness is as life threatening and as serious so please consider how

you make them feel.

Our focus today will be on how to overcome depression at a spiritual level.

When you wake up this morning think of as many things as you can that

provide you with hope and light.

Morning Meditation:

Today’s journal entry is based on the philosophy behind Solution

Focused Therapy. This is a therapeutic technique that allows the

client to visualize a time in their life when they could achieve the

selected emotional state. They discover how they achieved it and

use those same techniques to achieve it once again.

Journal Entry: Write about what you think led to your feelings of

unease and depression. Are you able to let go of that situation,

person or the things that led you there? When was the last time

you felt happy? What was different then? What is the answer to

your miracle question?

Below is a video that outlines the main “miracle question” clients

answer in that form of therapy.

Day Five: Warding off Psychic Vampires & The Veil of Protection

When we gather with friends, family and co-workers for the holiday, the festivities

can lift us up and fill us with the joy of the season. But, the alternate situation can also

occur; these situations can also make us vulnerable to what I like to call “Psychic Vampires”.

These are people who literally ‘suck the life out of you’ with their toxic, negative energy.

We have all come in contact with these people and we leave them feeling deflated and empty.

Remember, you have the power to say no to situations and people that are toxic to you and

if they pull you into their vortex you can simply walk away. If you are forced into a situation

with someone and you can’t get away, how do you protect yourself from their toxicity?

Today’s focus will be on protection of our spiritual energy field.

Being conscious of how others affect you is the first step in the protective process.

When you wake up think about the day ahead of you and try to be conscious of any situations that

may make you vulnerable to toxic, life-sucking energy. Then think about the parts of your day that

will balance that energy-the positive ones that you are looking forward to.

Journal Entry: Today make chart with a line down the middle and on one side of the

page make a list of people who make you feel full-who there is an equal amount of

give and take-who you can be truly yourself without fear of judgement. On the other

side make a list of people who deplete your energy-focus on the negative-take without

giving and judge you. Take some time to really think about how you can alter who you

spend time with and what that new choice would do to enhance your life.

While spending time with an uplifting friend I spoke to her of how

I was feeling unable to block out the negative energies of my clients and collegues

as a counselor. She suggested I find an image of a powerful animal and place the

picture somewhere in my office so that it could remind me daily of the strength I

hold within me. I came home that evening and told my family what my friend had said.

My son asked me to not come in the kitchen for several hours as he was working on

a special project. He then invited me in and handed me the most beautiful sketch of

a lion and the words-“Be Strong Mom” in bubble letters at the top. I wept and

placed in in a frame above my desk that very next day. It is in my office along with

the one below.

Go online and find an image of that animal that you connect to. Print it

off and frame it. Put it somewhere you will see it regularly throughout your day.

yourself from their negative energy. Life may not allow us to be able to have

control of who we are surrounded by, but by being conscious of how others affect

us we can enable ourselves to stay strong and not allow ourselves to be dragged

down by others.
